Centre for Asian & Area Studies

The Centre for Asian & Area Studies is established with the aim to study and analyse Asian history, society, culture, economy, politics, urban structures, and philosophies in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives.

Asian and Area Studies have been traditionally visualised and interpreted from the Western perspective, and the ideas of the discipline’s political and cultural geography are rooted in colonialism. The Centre studies Asia from the Asian perspective, transcending the confines of conventional area studies models.

Objective

  • To emerge as a knowledge generator for Asia from the Asian perspective through academic research and publications in collaboration with academic scholars from Asia.
  • To encourage research and teaching on the themes of civilisational interactions between regions and communities on the principles of mutual respect and cooperation.
  • To design a novel model of urban studies involving a collective of scholars.
  • To offer courses at Graduate and Postgraduate levels to study the different facets of Asian Civilisations.

Transarea Journal

The Centre for Asian & Area Studies runs an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journal, and it is published semi-annually (Spring Issue and Autumn Issue). It acts as a bridge between regions, disciplines, and methodologies to encourage innovative perspectives that offer insights into the complex, interwoven realities of our world.
